He is the President of China, which makes him the leader of one of the strongest militaries in the world and head of the Worlds second largest economy.
His role in Brexit, however indirect, has been significant.
One major reason offered by the Leave campaign for Brexit was that leaving the EU would give Britain an opportunity to trade with the rest of the world; “out of EU and into the world” as one of the popular campaign posters said. The knight in the shining armour for the leave trade experts was always China.
Xi Jinping, the Chinese premier became a beacon of hope for the Leavers. PM May met Xi on the sidelines of the G20 summit and Xi has reportedly promised more access to the Chinese markets. Trade experts say China could be the best trade partner for the UK, but it may come at a cost.
Xi is not exactly known for his benevolent politics. It could be difficult for PM May to get a great trade deal out of China, but it may also be worth the pain of leaving the EU.
