William and Lucy Lowe are undoubtedly the power couple of the alcohol industry. The Cambridge based pair are the owners of Cambridge Distillery — the outfit dedicated to creating “outstanding” gin.
Every gin that the Lowe’s have ever released have won international awards for quality, and their unique distillation methods have led to Cambridge Distillery being awarded three consecutive times as the most innovative distillery in the world.
They put their success down to using only the freshest in-season ingredients from the Cambridge countryside, a perfected distillation method individually executed on each bottle, expert blending, William’s 20 years experience and Lucy’s business development brain.
Lucy’s role as managing director sees her oversee all business operations leaving Will to create the gins as master distiller.
In 2015, the husband and wife duo officially released the worlds most innovative gin in collaboration with Nordic Food Labs. Anty Gin is the first gin in the world made from insects — 62 red wood ants foraged from the countrysides of Kent to be precise.
The insects are known for their citrus flavour, caused by the formic acid they produce in their abdomens and spray as a defence mechanism. When mixed with alcohol it produces aromatic flavours.
The insect-infused gin — which comes with a hefty price tag of £220 — is also accompanied with a 5cl dropper bottle of pure ant distillate, just in case punters wanted to try neat essence of ant.
Cambridge Distillery is also the first in the world to introduce gin tailoring producing bespoke gin blends for individuals, institutions and some of the world’s leading restaurants.
