Shen Haixiong (慎海雄) is a veteran journalist and the deputy director of State Administration of Radio, Film and Television in China.
He was previously the Head of the Propaganda Department of Guangdong Province.
He was appointed as the president of China Media Group (中央广播电视总台), the merger of China Central Television (now the China Global Television Network), China National Radio and China Radio International, following the sudden and mysterious removal of his predecessor. China Media Group is one the most dominant broadcasting network in China, with a network of 50 channels and a reach of over one billion viewers.
As the head of China’s largest media network, he has direct influence over people’s perception of the government. China Central Television launched its international verticals in 2008, although in a much-limited sense due to vetting and censorship by the Chinese Government.
Haixiong is close to The Communist Party establishment and is highly favoured by the Politburo — the almighty political body of China. In 2018, he interviewed Vladmir Putin, president of Russia, before his visit to the People’s Republic of China.
Much of Haixiong’s career has been spent in journalism, first at the Zhejiang provincial division of the Xinhua News Agency, then as the editor-in-chief of the Shanghai branch of Xinhua. He was awarded the honour of being listed as one of the 10 best Xinhua journalists. He also worked at the Korean Broadcasting System and Asahi Shimbun.
