What makes Sarah Friar a Global Shaker?

Sarah Friar is the Northern Irish entrepreneur best known for her work for wireless payment company, Square. Born and raised in the quiet town of Sion Mills, Country Tyrone, Friar attended Strabane Grammar School before securing a place at the prestigious University of Oxford, where she graduated in 1996 with a degree in Metallurgy, Economics and Management. Friar moved on to the Stanford University Graduate School of Business in 2000, where she obtained a masters degree.

Friar’s career in business began immediately following her graduation from Oxford when she worked as a Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company in London and Johannesburg. Her career rapidly built momentum after her time at Stanford University, rapidly rising through the ranks of Goldman Sachs, originally as an Associate in the company’s Technology Investment Banking Group. Friar then transitioned to the Investment Research division before eventually becoming a Managing Director and a Business Unite Leader for Technology.

Since leaving Goldman Sachs Friar has worked as Senior Vice President, Finance & Strategy at Salesforce.com. Over recent years, however, the Irish entrepreneur has become most commonly known as CFO at Square, one of the world’s most successful wireless payment firms. Friar has spearheaded the company’s initial public offering since 2012, and also sits on the boards of software analytics company New Relic and instant messaging start-up, Slack.
