Robert Paterson is the co-founder of ORB Innovations, the creators of a pioneering new mouthguard that aims to reduce concussion in contact sports.
Every minute it is worn by players, ORB’s ‘smartguard’ collects 500,000 data points and can help identify when the wearer has been concussed, prevent stress-related injuries, and recommend personalised training plans.
The young entrepreneur created the company with Thomas Quinn after suffering a head injury while playing rugby at college and being misdiagnosed with concussion. Paterson ended up constrained to a bed for five weeks because of bleeding on the brain, but thankfully suffered no long-term damage.
The product was one of 10 finalists for the innovation agency Nesta’s National Inventor Prize in 2018, and was the winner of £30,000 in research and development funding through the Morgan Innovation and Technology Prize in March 2019. Paterson’s invention was covered in an interview segment on BBC News.
