Rachel Shapey is the founder of I Can Compose, a website designed to support students at GCSE and ‘A’ Level through the academic side of musical composition. The business is the first resource for teaching composition in a digital format.
I Can Compose won £10,000 through the Stelios Awards for Disabled Entrepreneurs, jointly founded by Easy Jet’s Stelios Haji-Ioannou and disability charity Leonard Cheshire. It has also been recognised as a finalist in the Internet Industry Category of the 2018 Enterprise Vision Awards.
Shapey, a former secondary school music teacher – whose pupils have even gone on to secure record deals – was diagnosed with MS twelve years ago. She told the BBC that running her new role allowed her to work flexible hours and be at home with her young children. “Working on my own business is just fantastic,” she told the BBC. “I’ve never felt healthier actually since I’ve started the business”.
