Peng Lei (彭蕾), also known as Lucy Peng, is a co-founder of the Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group and Ant Financial, Alibaba’s affiliated financial services arm and the most valuable FinTech company in the world.
Ant Financial originated as Alipay, which was originally set up to support small businesses. Under Peng’s management as CEO of the corporation, Alipay became the most successful payment gateway in China.
Lei worked for over 10 years as the chief people officer of Alibaba Group in the HR department that she led and founded. In this position, she started the successful “mom and pop” model, in which a “mom” focused on teamwork and motivation while a “pop” handled performance assessments.
She now holds the position of chairwoman of Lazada, an e-commerce company.
Lei is one of only 21 self-made women billionaires in China (as of 2017). In 2016, Lei was given several honors by Forbes, including being ranked as #35 on the Most Powerful Woman in the World list and was #17 on the Asia Power Women list. In 2015, she was #11 on Fortune’s Most Powerful Woman in Asia list.
