What makes Nduka Obaigbena a Global Shaker?
Media mogul Nduka Obaigbena is the chairman of Leaders & Company, which publishes ThisDay, one of the most influential newspapers in Nigeria. He has been the subject of intense criticism for his closeness to politicians and for a consistent failure to pay staff salaries.
In 2011, an Al-Jazeera Television programme indirectly accused Obaigbena of being a corrupt journalist who blackmailed public officials. Al-Jazeera issued an apology shortly afterwards when Obaigbena refuted the allegations.
In 2013 Obaigbena launched an international TV news channel with an African focus, Arise News, signing a contract with Globecast for satellite transmission through the UK Sky platform. At the start of 2016 the High Court shut the network down, with some UK staff being left unpaid.
