Lizzo is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, LGBTQ icon and fierce advocate for self-love and body positivity. After the release of her second albumin in 2015, Big Grrrl Small World, she was signed to Atlantic Records. Soon afterwards, she released the 2016 major-label EP Coconut Oil. On April 19, 2019, she released Cuz I Love You, her third studio album.
The star was born in Detroit and raised in Houston, Texas from aged 10. She spent a year living in her car at age 21, as she tried to break into the music industry in the wake of the death of her father.
The rapper struggled with body confidence issues from an early age but has since turned it around recently telling V Magazine that “I love my body — No matter what angle you shoot it at… my body is just so fucking beautiful all the time.”
The focus of her music is geared towards the female form, race and sexuality and her group of back-up dancers, the Big Grrrls, consists of all plus-size women.

Highlighting body inclusivity and celebrating individuality, Lizzo appeared in ModCloth‘s June 2018 campaign, “Say It Louder.” Later that month, she sported the first plus-size outfit made for the Fashion Institute of Technology‘s, Future of Fashion runway show by Grace Insogna at Pride Island LGBTQ event.
She was applauded for bringing the “black girl aesthetic” to her performance on Jimmy Kimmel in 2019 which began with her getting her hair braided on stage.
2019 turned out to be a huge year for the singer who was named Time’s Entertainer of the Year. With a whopping eight nominations across multiple genres, Lizzo leads the Grammys with the most nominations this year, a testament to her cross-category appeal.
