Kate Hofman is founder and CEO of GrowUp Urban Farms, a specialist in aquaponics and vertical growing technologies that aims to lower the environmental impact of agriculture.
She established the company after growing frustrated with the swathes of unused urban space in Britain’s cities, aiming to harvest fresh produce locally in these areas, from sustainable fresh and salads to root vegetables and kitchen herbs.
The aquaponics system – which had success in an industrial warehouse in East London — uses the natural harmony between fish and plants to produce a year-long harvest in a low-water use, low-energy system.
Hofman’s efforts have been recognised by Virgin Media, which rewarded her with a position on a “Business Disruptors to Watch” list, and her company was a BBC Future Food Award finalist.
