What makes JP Gan a Global Shaker?

JP Gan (甘剑平) is a managing partner at Qiming Venture Partners (启明创投). While he’s been widely respected as a top venture capitalist internationally and in China for several years, the recent IPOs of video sharing site BiliBili, on-demand delivery service Meituan-Dianping, and fashion social site Mogu propelled him to the number 5 ranking on Forbes’ 2019 Midas List. Some of his investments include Meitu Inc., Ctrip.com, Dianping.com, Jiayuan.com, Taomee, PPS Inc., and ATL.

Qiming focuses on three sectors: healthcare, information technology, and “inter-sumer,” a term coined by JP as a mixture of “internet” and “consumer.”

“I think overall mobile continues to be an important investment area,” he told Forbes. “But increasingly people are looking toward AI and big data.”

JP started his career in venture capital at Carlyle Group in the year 2000. During his time there, he was a founding member of the Asian venture fund, which was in charge of the firm’s expansion into mainland China.

Prior to his career in venture capital, he was the chief financial officer for KongZhong Corporation, an investment banker at Merill Lynch, and a consultant with then-Price Waterhouse.

He earned a bachelor’s in business from the University of Iowa and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth Business School.
