As is the case with many successful entrepreneurs, Locate-a-Locum founder Jonny Clarke found his initial area of expertise far outside the world of business. After studying pharmacy at Queen’s University for four years, Jonny spent a year as a pre-reg pharmacist before experiencing first-hand the effects of economic recession.
With jobs scarce across Northern Ireland, Jonny jumped at the opportunity to complete locum work, working in hospitals and pharmacies across the capital for around three years. It was during this time spent moving around different workplaces which gave Jonny the inspiration behind his impressive business, Locate a Locum.
As a locum pharmacist, Jonny became aware of how business cards were often thrown in a bin or at the back of a shelf. The young entrepreneur set about creating his own site with his own professional details on it – and encouraged his colleagues to join him. The website spawned a mobile app which connects pharmacies and locums directly. Indeed, with one click of a button a locum can apply for a shift and is immediately connected with the pharmacy.
The value behind Clarke’s business has been recognised by Catalyst’s Invest Competition, which awarded Locate a Locum the award for the prestigious internet category in 2016. With plans to roll out the service across Europe, the future is bright for this Belfast-based businessman.
