What makes Javier Goyeneche a Global Shaker?

Javier Goyeneche is the founder of Ecoalf, an ethical fashion brand that creates clothing and accessories entirely from recycled materials.

The company estimates that it has recycled more than 80 million tonnes of plastic bottles to date, adding a commitment to avoid the use of any chemical products in the creation of water-resistant clothing that are harmful to animals.

Alongside a range of recycled product lines, including sports shoes worn by football stars, Goyeneche’s company is renowned for funding the creation of ‘Upcycling the Oceans’ (UTO). The project, now running in both Spain and Thailand, recovers waste from the ocean floor and converts it into pellets, which are then used to obtain a polyester filament and transformed into fabrics to make clothes.

Following support from the ECOEMBES project, the project has reached the entirety of the Spanish coast, involving more than 2,500 fishers across 37 ports. More than 330 tonnes of rubbish has been recovered from the seafloor to date.

Ecoalf has become the first fashion brand in Spain to be a certified B Corporation, meaning it is inspired to be both “the best in the world and the best for the world”.
