Jamal Daniel’s digital news company Al-Monitor is pioneering the digital news movement in the Middle East. Based in the United States, Al-Monitor has quickly risen up to be one of the most reliable sources of news based in the region.
Jamal was born in Syria and grew up in Lebanon before moving to the United States for higher education. After receiving his MBA, he went into a career as an investor, becoming a successful venture capitalist and investor in the energy, technology, and telecommunications sectors. He is currently the president and chairman of Crest Investment Company.
To promote intercultural and international relations between the Middle East and the United States, he founded The Levant Foundation, a non-profit organisation that aims to further knowledge about Middle Eastern culture, history and religion. The foundation works with religious, research, educational and art institutions to sponsor artistic and academic programs. In the same year, he also founded Al-Monitor to serve as a bridge between the Middle East and western society. The website focuses on news in Egypt, the Persian Gulf, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, North Africa, Palestine, Syria, Turkey and Russia’s relationship with the Middle East, with reporting done by experts and analysts. In 2015, the company expanded their coverage to on Washington, DC, and added a culture section, a new podcast and video coverage.
Al-Monitor has received much critical acclaim. The Washington Post called Al-Monitor “an invaluable web-only publication following the Middle East”, and the Huffington Post noted that the media outlet is “increasingly a daily must-read for insightful commentary on the Middle East.” The International Press Institute awarded the company its Free Media Pioneer Award, and the Online News Association honored Al-Monitor with an Online Journalism Award for Best Explanatory Reporting for the series “Middle East Lobbying: The Influence Game”.
