Issam Darui (عصام دروي) is the founder and CEO of Lagare.ma, the first online bus portal in Morocco as well as Africa’s largest online transportation platform. The company allows its users to compare, book, and search for bus tickets anywhere in Morocco.
Issam founded Lagare.ma when he was only 20 years old. Lagare.ma offers services in 10 languages, 25 different currencies, and schedules to over 150 destinations in Morocco and the European Union, making over 10,000 departures on a given day. Within its first year, the company won the Best Business Startup award at the Startup Oriental competition in 2014.
Within the first year of its launch, Lagare.ma was named Best Business Startup at the Startup Oriental competition in 2014. In following years, the company won the MSI AWARDS, the Maroc Web Awards and was named to the African Leadership Academy. In 2019, Lagare.ma was as a finalist among the top 10 start-ups in the MENA region for the 12th edition of the MIT Entreprise Forum Arab Startup Competition.
Lagare.ma is not Issam’s first foray into the transportation industry, as he comes from a long line of public transport workers and drivers. At as teenager, he would work as a driver’s assistant during his holidays from school, looking for ways to improve the commuter experience. Interested in information communication and technology, Lagare.ma combined his passion for technological innovation and transportation.
The young entrepreneur made the list of 12 promising African entrepreneurs for the 2016 edition of the Anzisha Prize and won the Young Outstanding African Entrepreneur of the Year award from the African Awards Network in 2017. He is also planning on extending Lagare.ma to other African countries.
