What makes Denise Coates a Global Shaker?
Denise Coates is the British billionaire businesswoman best-known for her role in founding Bet365, one of the largest online gambling companies in Europe. The English tycoon is the eldest daughter of Stoke City F.C. Chairman Peter Coates, and graduated with a degree in econometrics from the University of Sheffield.
Denise Coates’ destiny in gambling began while she was still a schoolgirl. After working in the cashier’s department of the family bookmaking firm, Provincial Racing, Coates marked up bets before training as an accountant and eventually taking over the small chain of shops. Coates received praise for turning around the fortunes of the business, eventually applying for a loan from Barclay’s to acquire a rival gambling chain.
In recent years, Coates has become famous for becoming the UK’s highest-paid boss, with the Bet365 chief taking home over £217m in wages for 2017’s financial year. As of February 2018, Coates’ net worth is estimated at $5.1 billion.
In January 2012, Coates was appointed as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the community and business. A year later, Coates was named as one of the 100 most powerful women in the UK by Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4.
