Cindy Mi, also known as Mi Wenjuan (米雯娟), is the founder and CEO of VIPKID, the world’s largest English learning platform for children. Born in Hebei, she started teaching English to young children when she was 15 years old, after teaching herself the language. She realized that many parents struggled to find quality teachers, and that a lot of the curricula being used to teach English were outdated.
“What motivated me to start VIPKID was the possibility of inspiring every child for the future,” Cindy said in an interview with Y Combinator.
VIPKID, which was founded in 2013, has partnered with educational institutions such as Oxford University Press and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to develop several curricula for students in pre-K to 12th grade. The platform connects China, along with over 60 other countries, with the best teachers across the globe for real-time, one-on-one learning through English immersion education techniques. The company has already amassed a pool of more than 60,000 teachers, 500,000 paying students, and 300 low-income rural schools in China through the company’s Rural Education Project.
The project is a late-stage venture and has already received $825 million through seven rounds of funding.
