Ben Gorham founded BYREDO (short for ‘By Redolent’) in 2006. Since then, the company’s stylish black-and-white packaging and evocatively named scents, such as Gypsy Water and Bal d’Afrique, have garnered a devoted fashion-world following.
The 40-year-old Swede was born to an Indian mother and Canadian father and spent his childhood in Toronto, New York and Stockholm, graduating from Stockholm Art School with a degree in Fine Arts. However, a fascination with the scents he discovered in his mother’s hometown and a chance meeting with perfumer Pierre Wulff changed his career plan, and he collaborated with renowned perfumers Olivia Giacobetti and Jerome Epinetteto to create his scents.
He is also known for his zany projects, such as his snub-nosed jack-knife in collaboration with M/M Paris. This year, Gorham and Off-White’s Virgil Abloh unveiled their Elevator Music concept in Paris— a sensory experience with a multi-category capsule collection, including music and art. A home fragrance for IKEA is due to launch in 2019.
