What makes Ana Duék a Global Shaker?
Brazilian journalist Ana Cecilia Duék is the creator of Viajar Verde (‘Travel Green’ in English), a website platform “for sharing collective experiences and common goals” about sustainable travel.
The platform boasts more than 30,000 followers on Instagram.
Writing on the website, Duék explains Viajar Verde was born out of the need to increase information about responsible tourism in Brazil and around the world, and to make the sector more sustainable and conscious.
“Our aim is to provide space for positive ideas in environmental protection, sociocultural valorisation and economic sustainability that can be multiplied by travellers, entrepreneurs, communities, NGOs, authorities, associations, destinations and others involved in the delightful activity of travelling,” she writes. “And, of course, making tourism a healthy opportunity for all.”
Duék has more than ten years of experience in communications and with tourism businesses. She began studying sustainable tourism when doing an MA in Tourism and Hospitality Management in 2010 at Middlesex University, realising Brazil needed new initiatives to support a more conscious tourism.
She writes explainers on how to travel responsibly in a pandemic, and an explainer on ‘voluntourism’. There are also articles on tips for hotels to reduce plastics in the time of coronavirus.
Viajar Verde recently joined the Future of Tourism coalition, signing the Guiding Principles. “As signatories, we commit ourselves to putting areas’ needs at the heart of our recovery strategies and doing our part to build a better future for people, planet and travel!” She adds.
