Alexey Nikolov, a journalist since the age of 13, now heads RT, Russia’s biggest English language TV network. RT is one of the most-viewed news channels on YouTube, racking up 2.8 billion views and reportedly reaching more than 700 million people worldwide.
Nikilov’s career began with a focus on sports journalism during the Soviet era, a topic largely devoid of political interference. Since 1994, Nikolov has worked on Russian television, becoming a key figure in the launch of the new national network, REN TV. Nikolov is a winner of the Russian Union of Journalists’ award “For Professional Excellence”.
As RT Managing Director, he has responsibility for the entire organisation, including English, Arabic and Spanish channels. He works closely with Margarita Simonyan, Editor-in-Chief of RT, who set up the organisation in 2005.
RT, formerly known as Russia Today, has been frequently described as a propaganda outlet for the Russian government and its foreign policy. RT is a brand of “TV-Novosti”, an “autonomous non-profit organization” founded by the Russian state-operated news agency, RIA Novosti. The UK media regulator, Ofcom, has repeatedly found RT to have breached rules on impartiality.Tags: journalism
